Hi, I'm Andy Meiner, the founder of SI-Squared. I've worked in 'digital health' or' e-health' since graduating from Liverpool Uni in Computer Science in 1990. Since then, I've always worked on the vendor side, starting as a software engineer for one of the two 'giant' US vendors of the time, and since then, working for multiple vendors of different sizes in just about every role available, from developer to managing director with experience in just about every role in between. Although I still consider myself technical, I am far more focused on the benefits of interoperability, for vendors and health and providers alike, and of the human and commercial factors involved in achieving them, allowing me to bridge the gap between the technical and business worlds and ensuring that both sides are fully engaged.
Since developing and deploying some of the first HL7 interfaces in the NHS over quarter of a century ago, I have been passionate to the point of obsession about integration and interoperability in health and care. At first it was fun but as I have grown, matured, experienced at first hand the problems that occur when systems and people can't exchange information safely across borders, and engaged with healthcare providers at the front line, I have seen that interoperability is not a 'nice to have' but an absolute necessity for the safe delivery of care and, never more keenly felt in the current economic climate, essential for the redesign of healthcare services to meet the demands of the 21st Century.
Health systems looking to 'go digital' today are bereft of choice, being forced to go 'where the proven functionality is' with duopolies being created of systems that are based on old technology and use proprietary data models which cause the dreaded 'vendor lock-in', prevent the use of data to drive improvements in health and care, and are ill-suited to make use of cloud technologies that allow the patient/citizen greater control of how they consume health and care services.
The future is undoubtedly cloud-based data platforms that allow solutions to 'plug-in' to a common data model and exchange data. This approach has revolutionised service delivery in just about every industry outside of healthcare but today we are caught in between two paradigms - the functionality we need today locked in restrictive legacy technologies, and a lack of functionality in the cloud technologies that we need to truly transform services and drive innovation.
If you are a modern, agile vendor with a cloud-ready health or care solution which needs to integrate with the current legacy technologies of today then SI-Squared exists to help you accelerate this process and ensure that your strategy for tomorrow is future proof. We do this by making use of technologies such as HL7 FHIR and openEHR in an optimal way, using our extensive network of experts and partners so that we are always up to date with the latest developments and knowledge, and we share and implement with you so that you build your internal capabilities going forwards.
If you are a provider of health and care services, then we can assist with creating your strategy but also with the actual delivery. Often consultancies will produce a nice report but leave the problem of how to actually deliver the benefits. Our strategy encompasses all the technical and non-technical factors to consider. We can also assist in the selection process, ensuring that prospective solutions meet the integration and interoperability standards to meet your business needs.
We treat every client as bespoke. We understand that the technology bit is always easier than the people part. We develop a strategy that is right for your business and we help you deliver it in the most efficient way possible, today and for every tomorrow.
